DESCRIPTION AND ETHNOBOTANY
Growth Form
This tree is a fast-growing, deciduous tree that can reach up to 20 meters (65 feet) in height. It has a thick, swollen trunk, which serves as a water storage organ, allowing it to survive in dry environments. The branches spread widely, giving the tree a distinctive umbrella-like canopy.
Foliage
The tree has compound leaves, similar to other Moringa species, with small, delicate, oval-shaped leaflets. The leaves are bright green and provide high nutritional value, making them suitable for consumption.
Flowers
The flowers of Moringa hildebrandtii are pale yellow to cream-colored and grow in clusters. They are fragrant and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The tree typically blooms during the dry season.
Fruit
This species produces long, slender, pendulous seed pods, similar in shape to other Moringa species but larger and more elongated. Each pod contains winged seeds that are dispersed by wind and animals.
Habitat
This tree is native to the dry, spiny forests of southwestern Madagascar. It thrives in arid and semi-arid regions, with low rainfall, sandy or rocky soils, and high temperatures. It is drought-resistant and adapted to nutrient-poor, well-drained soils. Due to deforestation and habitat loss, it has become rare in the wild.
LANDSCAPING FEATURES
Desirable Plant Features : It has nutritious, edible leaves, fragrant yellow flowers, and long seed pods. The tree is adaptable to poor soils, making it ideal for arid environments.
Landscape Uses : This species is valued as an ornamental tree for its unique appearance and wide canopy that provides shade. It is used in xeriscaping, agroforestry, reforestation, and edible gardens. Its flowers attract pollinators, making it beneficial for biodiversity.
